Find an HSN code and GST rate for a common shop item

Search a product such as rice, soap, atta or tea. Use the result to start your check, then confirm the final classification before you bill or file.

Check it before you rely on it

Start with the product

Search by the actual product, not a broad aisle name. “Packaged atta” and loose atta may not be treated the same way.

Check the source bill

For the same item, your supplier’s current GST invoice is a useful cross-check.

Confirm the final code

Rates and classifications change. For an uncertain or unusual item, check the official portal or ask your CA.

The GST Portal says Table 12 of GSTR-1 currently uses four HSN digits for aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore and six digits above that. Read the latest GST Portal advisory before filing.

Set the HSN code once, not on every bill

An HSN code belongs with the product. Once you have confirmed it, save it against that item so your GST invoices carry it automatically instead of making you look it up at the counter.

Make GST bills without looking up the same item twice

Save a confirmed HSN code and GST rate once, then let every future invoice use it.
